Vector AI · T-shirts
Describe the graphic and Vector AI returns an SVG that scales to any print size without going soft. For detailed, painterly art, use the image studio, upscale it for the print area, then cut the design out with Background Remover. Both routes end in a file a print shop can use.

Made on Imgica. Each caption is the exact prompt.
Example 01
Prompt
T-shirt graphic, a vintage mountain sunset badge with the words "NORTH TRAIL CLUB" arched above it, three-color design in mustard, rust and cream, distressed screen print texture, no background
The SVG from Vector AI Standard, left, then the same prompt on Ideogram V3 Transparent, which needs no cutting out.
Example 02
Prompt
Minimal line art t-shirt design of a cat curled into a crescent moon, one continuous black line, a few small stars around it, centered, no background
Example 03
Prompt
Bold streetwear t-shirt illustration of a skateboarding octopus with each tentacle on a different board, thick outlines, flat bright colors, the word "OCTOSKATE" in graffiti lettering underneath, isolated on a plain white background
For print, upscale first and cut out last, which keeps the transparent background. Upscaling a cut-out loses it.

Printful's DTG guide asks for at least 150 DPI on most products and says it is best not to exceed 300 DPI. As pixel math, a 12 x 16 inch print area is 1800 x 2400 pixels at 150 DPI and 3600 x 4800 at 300 DPI. An SVG skips the question entirely.
JPG has no transparency, so a JPG design prints with a box around it. Export PNG with a transparent background, or SVG.
Dark shirts need light colors and a design without thin dark outlines that vanish; light shirts the opposite. Say the shirt color in the prompt.
Ask for two to four flat colors. Screen printing prices by color, and flat colors look cleaner in direct-to-garment printing too.
After Background Remover, zoom in on the edge against black. A faint light fringe will show on a dark shirt.
The Image Upscaler returns an opaque image, so a cut-out loses its transparent background when you upscale it. Upscale the full design, then run Background Remover.
Usually a PNG with a transparent background at print resolution, or a vector file. Printful's DTG guide, for example, asks for transparent PNG at 150 DPI or more in sRGB. Vector AI gives you SVG; the image route gives you a transparent PNG.
Big enough for the print area at your printer's DPI. As an example, a 12 x 16 inch area needs 1800 x 2400 pixels at 150 DPI. Run image designs through the Image Upscaler at 4K or 8K; SVGs need no upscaling.
